Historically used internally and externally to treat skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema, boils and acne. The herb in flowers and roots contain saponins, which are substances like hormones.
Particularly the root contains saponin saporoumpini, which on hydrolysis gives gypsogenini. The leaves contain vitexini and saponarini (flavonoids) and Vitamin C.
Both the Latin and common name of the plant indicate the traditional use of the plant in the wash. It was useful to trade in textiles for the laundry.
Prepared as a beverage. The best way to make the beverage is to soak four tablespoons of dry root in a liter of cold water for 5 hours. Then boil the herb in low heat for 10 minutes. Drink this beverage three to four times a day.
External use: It is used in compresses for eczema, boils and dermatitis (In large doses it is a powerful laxative and even slightly toxic. Must be administered under medical supervision. Overdose can destroy red blood cells and causes paralysis of the circulatory system .)
