Scientific studies into the chemical makeup of propolis have revealed that it is comprised of 16 amino acids and is a plentiful source of bioflavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory properties, while amino acids play an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system.

Propolis has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. A common use of bee propolis is in topical applications where it is applied to the skin to heal rashes and sores, and taken orally to heal cold and canker sores.

When it comes to medical research into bee products, the main thrust of the research effort seems to come from overseas. Doctors at the Institute for Microbiology at the Medical Academy in Poland found that propolis is able to stimulate the immune system. Headed up by Professor S. Scheller, the researchers determined that it works by increasing the development of antibodies, which in turn build our body resistance to diseases by promoting the release of certain chemicals that protect us from cellular deterioration. This was a fairly lengthy study into the benefits of propolis and it was concluded by determining other benefits such as a positive effect on healing damaged skin tissue, along with improved physical, intellectual and intimate/reproductive performance*

Rheumatism / arthritis – Propolis has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and those effects have been the subject of lab tests and research. Results have indicated that propolis may have benefits as a possible treatment for inflammatory diseases such as rheumatism / arthritis, though extensive research has not been conducted to prove/disprove this possible benefit.
